Publish Your Book Yourself!

Many people have tried their hand at serious writing. But when they presented it to a publishing firm, it was flatly rejected, perhaps more than once. It is very easy to get discouraged and wonder if trying to get it in print is worth it. On the other hand, they feel it would be tragic to just bury what they wrote.

For such people self-publish may be a good option. Here are some reasons to consider this investment. First, the rejecting publishers may be looking for material you find offensive. You want to stick with traditional themes that may not sell in today’s society. Perhaps your writing style is developing but you still want to get your message out to others in the meantime.

Self-publishing through a printing firm means that you pay for part or all of the cost of getting your writing into print. Many variations of this are available. Typically, the writer simply contracts to buy a given number of books. The writer will then market them himself in hopes of recouping the cost and making a profit. Better firms work with the writer to improve the content and help them get the books sold.

Companies handle self-publishing in a variety of ways. Some share the cost of printing and then in profits. Others dump the full cost on you and then, of course, you get the full profits once it is printed. If you go this route, be sure the publishing firm is reputable. There are many scammers who want to profit from you inordinately. For example, does the company demand that payment in advance? If they do, you are in danger of ending up with less money and no publication.

One advantage of self-publishing is to avoid the editor’s scalpel. Also, you can still share your work to others with a minimum of cost. Third, personal financial investment motivates the writer to do his best and makes him ask if he really believes it is good. Fourth, some good books were first self-published and then, as they became more public, a publisher is willing to invest in it.

The disadvantages of self-publishing are also important to consider. First, though you have no editor to strip beloved parts from your writing, you also may lack the expert critique that an editor gives. The work of an editor is usually positive.

Second, with no major publisher involved, you will not have the needed exposure to get your work published. If you don’t know a lot of people, it may be difficult to sell enough to recoup your expenses. Third, it is more money out of your own pocket. You may wonder why no one wants to publish it; you must believe in it to put both your time and money into the project.

If you are only interested in sharing your work with a few, why not try this idea. Print a copy of your work just as you want it to appear. Programs like Clickbook all you to collate it in a variety of sizes and with front and back correctly figured. Take this copy to a local printer and hire them to make the number of copy sheets you need.

Then take the copies to a hand bookbinder to make into hardbacks. This way, it will last for generations to come. If you need an expert, consider Tightly Bound Books where you'll receive "Book repair with personal care."
